Norwich v West Brom: More 'dogfight' from Albion required as FA Cup represents positive rather than hindrance

Albion are in a scrap, a dogfight, a battle - call it what you want.

They are fighting for survival. It is a season that began with such promise and at one stage had Albion on top of the Championship table.

But the slide down the standings has been gradual - until recent weeks where the decline has kicked in fully.

They are just two points above the drop zone and have arguably been sleepwalking into a disaster.

But now they are in a dogfight there is an argument that the need to show that fighting spirit - and even fight a little dirty.

The Albion fans saw a bit of that on Tuesday evening. Albion were timewasting, to the annoyance of the home crowd at St Andrews. They were picking up clever and pretty obvious yellow cards.

Charlie Taylor's hauling down of Demarai Gray was as obvious as they come. It sparked a melee involving a good 15 players.

It is a side of the the game that the purest doesn't want to see but for far too long we have not seen enough of it.

Albion have been too nice, and the tag they have had repeatedly clipped to them has been 'soft underbelly'.

That has reared its heads in recent weeks but they have, for now, kicked it into touch. They've showed they are up for the fight and they will fight dirty, which is something Ramsay believes they have to show because of the situation they are in.

Ramsay said: "We need to play in a way that is reflective of the situation we're in and I think now that it's in very sharp focus, hopefully the response you've seen over the last two games is partly to do with that.

"The fact that it's very obvious where we are and what we need to do and we have to play with a real edge and a real desperation to win and we've shown that in the last two games."

The fighting spirit and willingness to dig in during the tough times has been at the forefront of both of Albion's goalless draws across a four day period, having been in very short supply during the 5-0 humiliation at home to Norwich and 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth.

Having shown it and strung two results together for the first time since November, Albion now face a two week break from the league where the FA Cup comes to the front of minds.

Some may see the fourth round tie at Norwich as a hindrance - but there is no doubt Ramsay and Albion will not be looking at it that way.

They need momentum and the cup provides an opportunity to do that, albeit with less pressure which is a positive.

They need to show those 'dogfight' tendencies against their league and relegation rivals, and another positive result makes it three unbeaten heading into a key game against out of sorts Coventry City.

Ramsay will be without George Campbell and Chris Mepham through injury, while Krystian Bielik is likely to be back in contention having come off the bench late against Birmingham.

The Baggies head coach will no doubt turn to some of the club's youngsters, with Ollie Bostock and Harry Whitwell in line for starts. Others could also be named in the squad as Albion mix it up with a rotated side and eye on the clear challenges ahead.
