Gareth Ainsworth: Shrewsbury Town are still in the market for free agents

Shrewsbury Town are still looking at free agents to bolster their squad - says head coach Gareth Ainsworth.

Town had hoped to get one more player through the door in the January transfer window, but they missed out during the final hours on deadline day.

When the market shut more than two weeks ago, Ainsworth said Salop would consider looking at free agents - but as of yet, no one has come through the door to provide reinforcements.

Town have had a couple of injury blows in recent weeks, with Taylor Perry and Leo Castledine both missing matches, and the boss says if Shrews are going to dip into the market, then it will only be for the 'right' player.

"We've got lists," he said when asked if free agents are still an option by the Shropshire Star. "It is no secret that I'm looking because obviously with the Leo situation.

"And now Taylor Perry, there are a couple of attacking midfielders that we've lost.

"People are getting snapped up here and there, but we've got lists.

"We've got players that are out of contract. We have had a couple through the door training with us, that obviously we've had to keep behind closed doors.

"But we are looking, and if the right one comes, then we will.

"But he has got to fit. He's got to be better than the next person due to playing in that position here.

"There are some diamonds out there again, and we'll have to make sure that we're on the ball with them."

Salop are back in League One action this weekend when they welcome Stevenage to the Croud Meadow for their crucial third-tier clash.

The game is the start of a crucial set of fixtures which will go a long way to determine their fate - four out of their next six are at home.
