Gareth Ainsworth discusses the vacant club captain's position at Shrewsbury Town

Gareth Ainsworth has confirmed John Marquis will continue to be Shrewsbury's on-field skipper - but he has not decided if he is going appoint another club captain.

At the beginning of the season, Carl Winchester was given the position by Paul Hurst.

But last week, the 31-year-old midfielder, who made more than 100 appearances in blue and amber, left Salop to move closer to his family in Northern Ireland - signing for Derry.

Before his departure, Winchester found himself out of the Salop starting XI, and when that happened, Marquis was given the armband by Ainsworth.

And the Town boss has revealed he has not decided if he is going to name a new club captain.

"It's not an official announcement yet," he said when asked if Marquis was going to get the role. "I haven't got a club captain now. This term, club captain, it came in recently, didn't it? In the last 10 or 12 years. Where somebody looks after the boys as a club captain.

"We have Mal Benning, who is the PFA (Professional Footballer's Association) representative. He looks after all that sort of stuff.

"This club captain role, I believe that for me now, John is taking it forward on the pitch as that captain, that leader. He has been fantastic since I walked in.

"People can say whatever about John before the day I walked in. But since I have been here he has been nothing but a leader, buying in, trying to motivate the boys, trying to get them better.

"He gets frustrated because he wants to be so good and a winner because he's played at a decent level.

"You don't score the amount of goals in your career if you're not a good player.

"So he has definitely shown me that he's a voice, and we've got a quiet squad. I've said that from day one. We've got a quiet squad, not many who put themselves out there.

"The way he plays, the way he exerts himself on that pitch, I think is an example to the players.

"Club captain is something else.  I don't know. I'll have to have a think about that one.

"Me and Dobbo (assistant coach Richard Dobson) what we do is we empower the boys a lot. So we probably get them to come up with what structure they want to do."
