Souness offered £20m for the club last week, but was told on Thursday that the written bid was not enough.

Since then, he has been in talks with his main backer, whose identity is still being kept secret, and his partners to discuss how they should respond to the Molineux setback.

But it is clear that the 53-year-old football legend does not intend to let Thursday's board statement from Wolves end his interest in buying the club.He said today: "We will be releasing a statement next week. We do not want to say anything this weekend which would take the focus away from the most important business of the weekend - which is obviously Wolves getting a good result against Cardiff today."

The very fact that the Souness consortium still want to have their say on the Molineux power struggle makes it clear their bid for control is far from finished.

Wolves rejected the Souness offer after declaring in the statement that it came in "significantly under" the value of other potential offers being discussed with un-named investors.

At the same time, Wolves have turned to the City financiers Rothschild to help find another possible buyer - although the blue-chip firm's global contacts are more likely to net a foreign owner which would be in conflict with owner Sir Jack Hayward's wishes.

For their part, the Souness camp is clearly not convinced those moves will result in a firm takeover offer for the club, while they remain equally keen to stay on the front foot in the struggle for popular support.

That will be on their minds when they do break their silence next week, although by signing a confidentiality agreement, Souness will be restricted in what he can say.

But Souness is adamant his UK-led consortium "ticked all the right boxes" and matched the £20m figure the president and owner quoted on radio before Christmas - and that is what is likely to be stressed next week.
