Rob Edwards makes formation admission for Wolves next season

Wolves are set to make a big change in style.

Rob Edwards admits he wants to play a back four next season in his efforts to transform Wolves.

The club have had tremendous success with a back five under Nuno Espirito Santo and managers since have largely stuck with it - while those that attempted to switch to a four quickly changed back when their side struggled.

A back five has felt like part of Wolves’ DNA but Edwards is keen to ‘shape’ Wolves in his own image, which he says will include a formation change.

“I want us to be a four,” the head coach said.

“Whether it's another midfielder or whether it's another forward on the pitch, I want us to be able to be more aggressive. That's where I see us going.

“The club for many, many years now has been a three or a five, and obviously had huge success under Nuno.

“A lot of managers have tried to get away from it, but then the recruitment has maybe brought it back to that as well.

“We're in a position now where we can say ‘we want to become this’, and we're in a position where we can make a lot of changes.

“It’s an opportunity to shape things the way we want to do it.”

Wolves ended last season winless in eight games and bottom of the Premier League, as supporters voiced their anger at a terrible campaign.

Since then, Andre’s new contract and a move to sign Kieran Trippier has pleased some fans with Wolves’ early transfer moves.

When asked how he remains positive about turning it around at Wolves, Edwards said: “I've been positive anyway.

“Maybe you haven't believed me when I've been saying that, it's just me being me.

“Maybe people will believe me a bit more now. There's a real feeling around the football club from Nathan (Shi), from the leaders, from Matt (Jackson) and myself, that we know we need to get this summer right.

“We're really, really passionate about delivering. The (Andre) news now, it's one thing and hopefully there's going to be more to come.

“This maybe gets people believing in us a little bit more.”
