'Lowest level': Wolves £10m loanee comes under fire from ex-Rangers man after Old Firm defeat

Nasser Djiga made just two starts for Wolves last season having arrived for £10m from Red Star Belgrade.

Signed under Vitor Pereira his game time was limited at the back end of last season.

In total he played just six times, with four coming as a substitute before early in the summer transfer window he was loaned out to Rangers.

He has gone on to make 40 appearances for the Ibrox club in what has been a rollercoaster of a campaign for the Gers.

A total of 38 of his outings have come as a starter as he nailed down a regular spot with Rangers coming back from their early season slump under Russell Martin.

They were still in the hunt for the Scottish Premiership title - but that has all ended now after suffering a 3-1 defeat to their Old Firm rivals Celtic on Sunday.

And Djiga came in for some strong criticism after the game for his display - with ex-Rangers man and pundit Andy Halliday laying into the Wolves loanee for his performance.

He said: “I don’t know how long we’ve got to pick the bones out of this, but from a Rangers point of view, it’s dreadful from the get-go.

“Nassr Djiga is jumping out to press someone who has no chance of getting the ball, Connor Baron is already shadowing that pass into feet.

“When a centre-half decides to jump out, the rest of the back four have to adjust and narrow up.

“You talk about mentality, look at Nasser Djiga’s reaction when the ball goes over the top.

“I mean, a light jog to try and get back into position, and then Emmanuel Fernandez, who’s goalside of Maeda, at no point makes any contact whatsoever.

“Then you see the change of speed from Daizen Maeda, to try to make a difference, to try to get in on goal, to try to score, Emmanuel Fernandez doesn’t change his speed at all, doesn’t make contact, and that leads to the second goal.

“From a sheer footballing perspective, I wouldn’t expect to see goals conceded like that at the lowest level of Scottish football.

“Across the back four, the errors are really, really poor.

“Before it even starts, when they’re in a back four, Rangers’ back four are 50 yards apart.

“There’s no compactness to it whatsoever, and then it all leads to Nasser Djiga deciding to step into a position where he should never go.

“The rest of the back four don’t adjust at all, but then when they’re breached and the ball goes over the top, there’s no willingness to get back and defend the situation.”

The 23-year-old remains under contract at Wolves until 2030 - and there has been talk in Scotland about Rangers potentially looking to make the deal permanent.
