"It won't affect him" - Rob Edwards on interest in Wolves star Joao Gomes

Joao Gomes is likely to leave Wolves this summer.

Rob Edwards insists Joao Gomes will not be affected by talks over his Wolves exit as Atletico Madrid prepare a bid.

The Spanish club have already opened talks with intermediaries over signing the Brazilian midfielder in the summer window, following Wolves’ relegation to the Championship.

With all parties open to a move for the right fee, Madrid are now expected to make a formal bid in an effort to get the deal over the line.

J.Gomes started against Spurs in Wolves’ latest loss and Edwards is adamant the player is still focused on finishing the season with Wolves.

“There will certainly be interest in Joao and I get it, he's a phenomenal player,” Edwards said.

“You saw from his commitment out there today and his performance level, that whatever's going on off the pitch, it won't affect him.”

In a lacklustre display against Spurs, Wolves fell to three consecutive defeats as Edwards was booed by some supporters at full-time.

J.Gomes played on the edge throughout the game, with a firm intensity despite the talk around his future.

Edwards was pleased with the midfielder’s performance and felt the team’s display deserved more.

“It's hard because people don't want to hear it after we've lost, but there were some really good performances there today,” Edwards said.

“There was a real commitment from all of them, there really was.

“They really, really tried. They're with it, they're with us, they're fighting. They really are.

“It's been hard this week. The final nail in the coffin being relegated.

“Maybe other teams would have just gone under completely today and it might have been an absolute shambles. It wasn't that.

“It was a proper game of football, but we lost it. There'll be people saying what they want to say about that, that's fine.

“But those boys that were out there today gave everything.”

Edwards was visibly frustrated in his post match press conference after another defeat and a negative reaction from fans - while some held up an anti-Fosun flag in the South Bank.

In a short answer on his thoughts on the game, the head coach felt Wolves were on the wrong end of fine margins.

“There was not much in the game,” Edwards said.

“I thought they edged the first half but I didn't feel under threat. I thought we had more of the second half.

“There was nothing really in the game. In the end, the way it was going to go, it was going to be a moment of magic or second phase of a set-piece, something like that, that won it, which obviously proved to be the case.”
