Gary O'Neil: Wolves have enough to add goals to game

Gary O’Neil believes he has enough in the Wolves squad to make them an attacking threat, despite the defeat at Crystal Palace.

Hwang Hee-chan’s equaliser seemed to set Wolves up for some points in South London, before the hosts rallied and secured a comfortable win.

Matheus Cunha added a late consolation goal, despite Wolves’ struggles to create chances, and after missing out on a striker on transfer deadline day, O’Neil believes he has enough talent to make this Wolves side a success.

He said: “Goals-wise time will tell, I think most managers are always keen for more options.

“We scored two away at Palace today, (Nathan) Fraser was here, he was able to step up and we had chances in attacking third

“The window has closed now, this is the group, this is us, this is what we are and it’s my job to make sure we get enough out of them.

“The recruitment team and people working on the transfers worked extremely hard to try to strengthen. Obviously losing a big player, an important player (Matheus Nunes) that late in the window can make it tricky so there was a lot of work that went in to try to line things up to make sure we could strengthen off the back of that.

“We got a few done and we missed out on a couple. But, as you have seen today, the group are capable of having a lot of control in games. Now the next part is we need to turn some of that into better results.

“It will be difficult for other people to see this today, of course, because it just goes down to a 3-2 defeat away to Crystal Palace but big strides have been made from the team that I saw and was working with three weeks ago to where they were today.

“But there’s still lots of room for improvement.”

Wolves managed 12 shots with four on target, to Palace’s 16 with 11 on target, and had Jose Sa to thank for some big saves throughout the game.

O’Neil’s side struggled for clear openings in the final third, despite scoring two goals, but the head coach felt Wolves did not deserve to lose the fixture.

He added: “It’s not one I felt like we were going to lose really at any point. Of course when you are 2-1 down then, but for the majority of the game I didn’t feel like we were really in threat of losing it. I thought we had decent control of it.

“Most of their chances came from us turning the ball over in some areas that we shouldn’t, technical breakdown.

“They were very threatening from those situations but in terms of when both teams were in shape and in structure, I thought we were the better side.

“We then lacked a little bit of punch. I think it was over 60 final-third entries which is a lot for an away game, more than Crystal Palace, but we didn’t really threaten their goal often enough from those for a variety of reasons.”
