The 53-year-old has already said his goodbyes to the Wolves squad and staff and not travelled with the team to Portugal, as he departs the club after two years.

Scott Bevan, the goalkeeping coach for Wolves under-21s, has been helping the first team since Roberts' departure, while Julen Lopetegui is now expected to make a decision on a permanent appointment.

Roberts is now in advanced talks to join AC Milan and become part of Stefano Pioli's backroom team.

The former QPR shot-stopper, who is also goalkeeping coach for the Wales national team, joined Wolves in June 2021 when Bruno Lage was appointed as head coach.

Roberts stayed at the club when Lage was sacked in October last year and helped interim bosses Steve Davis and James Collins lead the team until Julen Lopetegui was appointed.

Lopetegui then made the decision to keep Roberts in his role and as part of his backroom team.

Speaking in November after his appointment, Lopetegui said: “Tony is staying with us. He is experienced, he is a positive man and he has a good energy. I want this type of energy around me, that’s for sure.

“I have spoken with all the staff and they helped a lot. They told me key information about all the players and the situation for us, for me and my staff it’s very important.”

Roberts was a popular member of the backroom staff and liked among the players, but has now departed and is set for a new position in Italy.
