A host of German clubs are chasing the signature of Fabio Silva, with the striker set to depart Wolves this January.

The £35million forward has been out of favour under boss Gary O’Neil this season, with only three Premier League starts to his name.

The 21-year-old has been an unused substitute in the last five Premier League games and last featured away at Sheffield United on November 4.

Now, Silva is expected to move when the transfer window opens in January.

Reports in Germany have suggested top flight club Freiburg are keen on his signature and the Express & Star understands fellow Bundesliga clubs Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Monchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Union Berlin have all joined the race to sign Silva.

In addition, it is also understood clubs from both Spain and Italy are monitoring his availability ahead of a potential move.

Despite his limited minutes this season, and his only goal coming in the Carabao Cup, Silva will not be short of options with a winter move likely.

It is understood all parties would be open to a permanent move, but Wolves would want to recoup as much of the £35million they paid for him in 2020 as possible.

As a result, a loan with an option to buy is more likely if the striker is to move on.

Silva could still stay at Wolves if the right deal does not materialise, but all parties are now working on a resolution to allow him to move on and play elsewhere, with O’Neil offering the striker few chances.

After a successful season on loan at Anderlecht and PSV last year, in which Silva notched 16 goals in all competitions, the striker was convinced to stay by sporting director Matt Hobbs and rewarded with the number nine shirt.

But his early playing opportunities did not go to plan and he was quickly dropped by O’Neil, who has since hinted that Silva needs to do more in training to regain his place.

Silva has played just nine minutes of football in more than two months and is now prepared to depart in search of regular playing time.

Wolves made a late attempt in the summer window to sign a striker but saw moves for Che Adams and Boulaye Dia knocked back.

The club is now expected to be back in the market for a number nine when the transfer window opens in January and the need to recruit will be even more pressing if Silva makes his exit in the coming weeks.

O’Neil admitted Sasa Kalajdzic is the club’s only ‘out-and-out number nine’ and Wolves are determined to add a focal point to the team, to assist Matheus Cunha, Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto.

It is understood Wolves are also interested in bringing in a winger to add more competition to their attacking ranks, although the club still need to be cautious with their spending until the end of the financial year in April.
