Dave Edwards: Pereira dismissal, what makes a good Wolves boss and O'Neil surprise
Vitor Pereira was lauded in the summer and, thinking back to April and that six-game winning run, you would never have seen this coming.
Football turns quickly and now Wolves need to act quickly – but they need to act sensibly as well, to not rush Pereira's successor and end up with the wrong man.
It is really difficult to identify the right type of head coach, because Wolves head coaches in the past have been so different.
A lot of them have worked at the start and done really well initially, but Julen Lopetegui is very different to Gary O'Neil and Gary O'Neil is very different to Vitor Pereira.
Bruno Lage had a brilliant spell early on too and was very different to them as well. It's hard to say what characteristic makes a good manager, but what they do need to do is build relationships with players quickly.
The club can't do anything until the January transfer window, so Wolves' new head coach needs to get the players to trust them and get them onside. Pereira did that well early on last year.
Then obviously the new boss needs players to turn up in games too!
If you said on April 26 that Wolves are not going to win for 14 games and would only pick up three points from a possible 42 you would be looked at as absolutely delusional.
Unfortunately, the Premier League is ruthless. I'm sure Pereira will feel he was dealt a bad hand in the summer with the players that left the club and those they were replaced with, who were untested at this level.
I imagine Pereira will feel very disappointed in the manner of his last game.
That Fulham defeat was not a Vitor Pereira-type team performance that we saw last year or even in more difficult recent weeks.
Although results have been poor I still feel players have been out there fighting for him. Look at the Burnley and Chelsea cup game.
The performance at Fulham was really poor and the first time I've really questioned his team selection with Joao Gomes and Andre left out. I couldn't see the logic in it.
Looking forward and I was really shocked that Gary O'Neil's name emerged just purely because he only left Molineux 11 months ago and very rarely do you see reappointments happen – unless you're Darragh MacAnthony and Darren Ferguson at Peterborough!
From the owners' perspective, it was extremely difficult circumstances when O'Neil first came to Wolves after Lopetegui had left the club in the lurch a week before the season started.
He had a great first season and you didn't see the start of that next season coming.
However, he has now said no so it is back to square one for Wolves.
Some optimism Wolves fans can take is the club has been in this position twice in recent years, when Bruno Lage got sacked and when Pereira came in for O'Neil last season.
On those occasions, however, there was a lot of money spent in January – so that's what the owners have got to ponder. Are they willing to put in that money in January? And what have they got to offer a new head coach?
They have to get this right. This is the most worried supporters have been since Wolves' regained their Premier League status.
