Crystal Palace v Wolves preview: Gary O’Neil plotting tactics for Palace revenge

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil hopes to right the wrongs of last season when he takes on Crystal Palace tomorrow.

In charge of Bournemouth last campaign, O’Neil lost 2-0 in both fixtures against Palace.

Now at the helm at Wolves, O’Neil admits he has changed his tactics for tomorrow’s trip to Selhurst Park as he looks to enact some revenge.

“Palace is an interesting one – we struggled against them twice with Bournemouth last season in truth,” O’Neil said.

“So I’m looking forward to trying to put that right. I have changed a few things around in terms of how we approach the game and go about it.

“This is a different group but we have enough in the changing room to cause Palace some problems.

“But they’re a good side – I watched them against Arsenal and they were well in that game, got as decent result at Brentford, won at Sheffield United.

“So they’re a good side with good players – Eberechi Eze, Odsonne Edouard and the two centre-backs are a really good partnership, with an experienced manager, so it will be a tough game at a tough place to go.

“But it’s one where if we give a good version of ourselves, we have a really good chance of taking something from it.”

In the opposite dugout, O’Neil will face veteran boss Roy Hodgson.

The 76-year-old came out of retirement to return to Palace in March and keep them in the Premier League, before agreeing to stay on for this season.

Having started his managerial career in 1976 and been in charge of dozens of clubs, O’Neil has plenty of admiration for the former England boss.

O’Neil added: “I have an unbelievable respect for Roy. I spoke to him at the end of last season at our game then and to have worked as an elite manager for as long as he has, and still put the work in every day to put a team out at the weekend that competes at Premier League level is an incredible achievement and I’ve got huge respect for him.

“In terms of people I look up to, it’s people that have been successful in the industry.

“You always try to study the top ones, the ones that have enjoyed longevity and the ones who are innovative and coming up with new things.

“We’re fortunate in the Premier League in that we’ve got some top managers everywhere you look.

“It’s an elite league, player wise and coach wise.”

Meanwhile, Fabio Silva will be hopeful of keeping his place in the team after being awarded the number nine shirt.

Talks had previously taken place to give him the iconic number, before it was mutually agreed they would wait amid uncertainty over the player’s future.

But with him now staying, Silva has been handed the number nine and will look to build on his opening goal of the season against Blackpool in the Carabao Cup, when Wolves travel to face Palace.
