Cesar Peixoto lays down Wolves challenge after Burnley comeback

Peixoto issued a mentality warning ahead of Wolves’ Portsmouth clash.

Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto has challenged his players to maintain the mentality shown in their comeback win at Burnley.

Wolves returned to winning ways at Turf Moor on Friday night, halting their post-international break struggles and restoring some momentum to their promotion push.

Peixoto believes his side set the standard with their performance and has urged them to carry those levels into the three consecutive home games ahead.

“It is that kind of mentality that I want in the team,” he said. “If we stay with this kind of mentality, it is very difficult to play against us.

“But we have to maintain the mentality in all of the games, like against West Brom, like today.”

Wolves host Portsmouth on Tuesday night before welcoming Watford and Cardiff City to Molineux before the end of the month.

They will be looking to build on their Burnley victory on home soil after suffering their first Molineux defeat under Peixoto against Bolton Wanderers.

Despite the contrasting results, the Portuguese head coach insisted he would not allow either victory or defeat to affect his perspective, stressing the importance of consistency and composure during a demanding schedule.

He added: “It is only three points. I do not get too low when we lose, but I do not stay too high when we win.

“After three days we have a game again, and it stays like that. I want to maintain this kind of feeling and behaviour. The team needs the right mentality and stability.

“I have a lot of years as a player at the top level, I have more than 100 games in the first division in Portugal, I have a lot of experience. For me, it is an important three points, yes.

“I thought we were better in the last game (Bolton), we lost, but if you saw the statistics, we were better in all moments. We could score and win, but we didn’t.

“We knew it was a difficult stadium against a good team. We knew it (Burnley) was an important game, and we won, but it was only three points.”

Peixoto made six changes for the trip to Burnley amid a busy run of fixtures and hinted that further rotation could follow against Portsmouth.

The victory, Wolves’ first at Turf Moor since 2010, also ensured they avoided a third consecutive Championship defeat for the first time since 2017.

Attention has now turned to Tuesday’s clash under the lights at Molineux, where Peixoto wants his side to dictate proceedings.

“It’s important, but all the games are important and all the games are difficult,” he said.

“I know we’re playing at home and we want to be the main characters in the game, like we want to be in every game. But we have to stay focused because it’s going to be difficult, for sure.

“We’re going to try to win and manage the game. We want to be the team that takes control. But sometimes the opposition has quality too.

“The Championship is like that. Every team can beat every other team. Now we have to rest, then focus and work hard to try to win the next game.”
