Carabao Cup preview: Boss keen to continue Wolves' winning momentum
Wolves face Sheffield Wednesday tonight.
Cesar Peixoto is determined to go far in the Carabao Cup, but has revealed he may make changes to prioritise the Championship.
Wolves got their first Championship win of the season - and first away victory in the league for 16 months - with a strong display at Deepdale on the weekend, beating Preston North End 3-1.
It marked a notable improvement on the performance from the draw with Blackburn in their league opener and restored some hope that Wolves can fight towards the top of the league this season.
Going into tonight’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday in the second round of the Carabao Cup, Peixoto is eager to find the balance between winning the game and resting players, with a short gap between the Preston fixture and an upcoming clash against Stoke at Molineux this Saturday - while also admitting the Championship is his priority.
"We're going to try to fight to win all the games,” Peixoto said.
"We have to see what we're going to do because it's a short time between games and after we have a game in the Championship, which is our big goal.
"Now we have to rest, give congratulations to the players, recover because after two days we have a game again.
"But we're going to put a team to fight to win the game for sure.”
Peixoto does have a big enough squad to make changes, but the homegrown rules will be something to consider, while he also has to ensure enough quality is picked to win the game.
Sam Johnstone is now back from his shoulder injury and even if his future is still up in the air, he could play.
With Kieran Trippier injured, Peixoto may choose to make another change at right-back to keep Jackson Tchatchoua fit, which could see Pedro Lima given an opportunity.
A number of other squad players like Tommy Doyle and Tawanda Chirewa could come in from the start if Peixoto makes enough changes, while Jordan James may not be ready for a start yet due to his lack of minutes before joining Wolves.
Nasser Djiga was given an opportunity to replace the injured Yerson Mosquera against Preston and the centre-back did well, meaning he could keep his place against Wednesday.
A decision will then have to be made whether Santi Bueno comes in, or Peixoto chooses continuity with Toti Gomes.
But the head coach was pleased with Djiga’s display when given the opportunity to impress.
"Nasser Djiga worked hard in pre-season, I like his work,” Peixoto added.
"He gave me the opportunity and I think he played well.
"The team helped him. He's a player we have to manage in some situations, but he stayed at a good level.
"I'm confident with all the players. Jackson did a great game also.
"All the players stayed at a good level. When the team stays organised it's easier for these kinds of players to come and play.
"They have more confidence in the game, in the defensive and offensive organisation.
"Nasser stayed at a good level. Congratulations to him because he worked hard to take this opportunity.”
Wednesday come into this game on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Bradford, after starting the season with a 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Bolton and a 2-1 League One victory against Leyton Orient.
