Captains fantastic...who should be next Wolves skipper?

With Ruben Neves' £47m transfer to Al-Hilal now complete, one of Julen Lopetegui's first tasks will be to choose a new club captain for the upcoming 2023/4 season.

Nathan Judah looks at four candidates who could fit the bill:

The next in line - Max Kilman

Kilman was identified as a future captain by former boss Bruno Lage following Conor Coady's loan to Everton last season.

Ultimately Ruben Neves was given the armband, but the centre-back was given the vice-captaincy for the entire campaign.

When Lopetegui took over the reins in December, Kilman was pivotal in Wolves' resurgence and skippered the side as Neves served a two-match ban in April.

This coincided with two huge back-to-back home wins over Brentford and Chelsea - both of which were also clean sheets.

Kilman would be the favourite to get the nod next season, but there are question-marks over his future.

Wolves are believed to be open to offers north of £30m with Napoli and Spurs interested.

But should the defender stay at the club, he'd be a solid bet to get the nod.

The fans' choice - Craig Dawson

Long-term target Dawson was a revelation following his £3.3m January move from West Ham.

At 33-years-old 'Ballon D'awson' made the dream start to his Wolves career scoring on debut in a 3-0 win over Liverpool.

Wolves were severely lacking experience and the defender provided everything Lopetegui needed for the club to survive relegation.

In a recent poll, 67% of fans voted Dawson to be their choice to lead the club next season.

With considerable domestic knowledge combined with the desire and hunger to still make an impact at the top level - many see Dawson as the perfect candidate.

He was one of the first names on the team-sheet and it was no coincidence that Max Kilman's performances took a huge upturn with a more experienced defender alongside him.

The outsider - Mario Lemina

Lemina was one of the very best pieces of business Wolves pulled off in January.

Much like Dawson, the Gabon international provided Premier League experience, but still with something to prove.

At 29-years-old, the former Southampton and Fulham midfielder admitted he made mistakes during his initial time in England.

But what Wolves got was a mature, indispensable player who protected the back-four with some masterful displays at the base of the midfield.

A brilliant character around the dressing room and well-respected by his team-mates, Lemina would be a popular choice should he be given the opportunity.

The dark horse - Matheus Nunes

Nunes came to the club with a big reputation following his summer move from Sporting Lisbon, but ultimately disappointed during his first season in the West Midlands.

However, you can make excuses for the Portuguese international - thrust into a struggling team with no real direction, Nunes was asked to play a variety of positions from left midfield to number ten and even right-back!

Ironically, we saw the best of Nunes when Neves was out of the side.

A man-of the-match performance vs Chelsea (h) including the Wolves goal of the season that will live long in the memory.

Neves' departure will give Nunes' position some real stability and he could be one of the big stars next season.

Incredibly vocal both on-and-off the pitch, Lopetegui will look for the 24-year-old to lead from the front.
