'We've seen enough': Caleb Taylor view and why West Brom can be relaxed as key man heads for Bologna

News on Wednesday of Torbjorn Heggem's imminent exit to Serie A side Bologna comes less than 24 hours after Albion bowed out of the EFL Cup.

The defender was left out of the squad that were beaten by Derby County amid continued speculation surrounding his future.

And that has now ramped up with the news that Heggem is heading to Italy to finalise a £10m switch to Bologna just a year on from his arrival at the club.

The impressive defender departs Albion after a stellar campaign that has saw him become one of the club's most important players.

Given his impact since his arrival from Norway, Heggem will leave a sizeable hole at the heart of the Albion backline.

But on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers - and then on Tuesday evening against Derby, we saw why Albion can be slightly relaxed about the defender's departure.

In terms of defensive departures, it will be the second in the last week or so after Kyle Bartley announced his retirement after injury issues.

However, the signing of Nat Phillips and his stunning debut against Blackburn at The Hawthorns has shown they have a capable leader and defender to step in at the back.

And alongside him there are two very suitable and able candidates vying for that other spot.

Academy graduate Caleb Taylor and new boy George Campbell were handed starts against Derby on Tuesday - and both did their chances no harm whatsoever.

Campbell looks like a solid, no nonsense defender. There was the odd stray pass but you're going to get that. However, he looked comfortable, assured and a good option to have.

And Taylor, re-appearing at Albion after two highly successful loan spells, is making his own claim.

Calm on the ball, commanding in the air and comfortable under pressure, he looked impressive against Derby. There was one blot on his copy book and that was the challenge that led to the winning free kick.

But like with other things, that will happen.

If the pair had looked shaky all evening and not capable of being a decent replacement for Heggem - then maybe fans could be forgiven for being slightly worried.

But they weren't. Heggem is going to be a big loss, there is no doubt about that. Given two defenders will have gone in a matter of weeks, there may be a case for a squad player to be brought in.

As for starters though, Albion look in a decent position.
