The four big contenders who could replace departed Jed Wallace as new West Brom captain
West Brom skipper Jed Wallace departed the club earlier this month.
West Brom skipper Jed Wallace’s four year stay at The Hawthorns came to an end earlier this month - as the club announced they would not be renewing his contract for next season.
The winger was signed as a free agent back in 2022 and went on to make 150 appearances, scoring 15 goals.
A year after his arrival he was instilled as Albion skipper following the departure of Jake Livermore.
In recent seasons, with Wallace picking up injuries and spending periods out of the starting line-up, the armband has been taken on by various other players, including Alex Mowatt.
With Wallace now departed, there is a question mark over who James Morrison will choose to wear the captain’s armband for next season.
Here are some of the possible contenders:
Alex Mowatt
The midfielder is heading into the final year of his Albion contract, having signed a new deal last summer.
The 31-year-old has been a mainstay in the starting line-up since he returned from a loan spell at Middlesbrough in 2023 - playing a key role under various Albion managers.
He was the official vice captain to Wallace last season after Darnell Furlong’s departure to Ipswich, so will no doubt be a possible contender to be a permanent skipper.

Jayson Molumby
Out of the other squad members, Molumby would be the obvious selection as a successor to Wallace.
The all action Irishman has been the driving force behind Albion’s midfield in recent years, and played a huge role in the push for survival at the end of the season.
Molumby’s leadership capabilities are there for all to see on the field. He leads from the front with his high energy displays, which have seen him become a firm fan favourite during his time at the club.
His commitment to Albion is unquestionable from the way he plays and the way he speaks in interviews. He just has all the hallmarks of a potential captain.
And his recent comments while on international duty about helping to develop young players is another reason why he should be a serious contender.
Nat Phillips
All of the defender’s 40 appearances last season came in the form of starts - with the former Liverppool man an almost constant in the backline for Albion.
Having began his Albion career superbly, his form did dip, much like many of the Albion squad.
But he could well be another contender, owing to his experience of playing at the highest level and his experience of pushing for promotion.

George Campbell
In terms of individual performances across the season, the £1.5m signing from Montreal was arguably one of the best and most consistent, having arrived from the MLS.
Firstly at right back before moving centrally, Campbell put in some superb displays and scored vital goals, including an equaliser at Sheffield United and a winner at Bristol City.
Defensively his statistics during Albion’s run in for duals and tackles were right up there - as he and Phillips marshalled the backline to seven clean sheets in eight games.
Although still relatively new to English football, he has showed he can very much lead from the front and could potentially be in Morrison’s mind for next season.
