West Brom's Mikey Johnston turned down late January interest to commit to club's plight

Albion star Mikey Johnston rejected late-window interest in his services to stay and fight for the club's cause.

It is understood there was firm interest in the winger's services from Turkish giants Trabzonspor, who were ready to table a bid.

Johnston had other interest, too, but is determined to play his part in helping the Baggies away from their desperate plight near the Championship relegation zone.

There was interest from an English top flight club in the Albion star.

Trabzonspor are third in the in the Turkish Super Lig and had strong interest in capturing the winger's services in a permanent deal.

Johnston is one of the Championship's leading assisters and his ammunition has caught the interest of clubs overseas. He has laid on nine goals this term.

There is also understood to be other interest in the Republic of Ireland international, but Johnston was uninterested in any move away from The Hawthorns this winter. There was nothing in rumours of interest from second-tier rivals Sheffield United.

The winger, who signed for £3million in 2024 following a successful loan from Celtic, wants to help his team-mates ensure Albion can move away from the lower reaches of the second tier.

Trabzonspor, who are based in the north east of the country and have a stadium of 41,000, finished seventh last season but are pushing for continental football this term.

Former Albion midfielder Okay Yokuslu remains among their ranks after the Turk moved there from The Hawthorns.

Johnston was close to a stunning £5million move to Brazilian giants Flamengo last summer, but the Rio de Janeiro club pulled the plug on the move at the 11th hour following an angry backlash from some of the Maracana club's supporters.

Albion face a very real relegation dogfight and would have had little appetite to lose one of their star turns late in the window, but a hefty bid would have been a test of the resolve.

Johnston is contracted at The Hawthorns until 2028.

The Baggies added teenage attacking duo Jameldeen Jimoh-Aloba from Villa and Crystal Palace's Hindolo Mustapha to their ranks on deadline day.

It is understood there is no substance in suggestions of Jayson Molumby and Johnston storming out from Albion training on Monday. There is frustration and angry words at the training ground, as expected due to the club's position, but talk of walking out of training is wide of the mark.
