West Brom player ratings: Trio land higher marks after impressive display in defeat

Albion correspondent Lewis Cox rates the performers in the topsy-turvy 3-2 EFL Cup exit at Newcastle.

MATT INGRAM

Full debut for the summer signing from Oxford. He conceded three but not especially at fault. Most eye-opening was with his feet, where he was very comfortable.

Tidy 6

ALEX WLLIAMS

What a night for the youngster from Warwick. Right-back Williams, 21, was a constant thorn in Newcastle’s left side. Williams gave Lewis Hall a good test. He got forward often and defended well.

Exciting 8

CHRIS MEPHAM

Can be very pleased with his first start of the season. The experienced defender made some important blocks and tackles. Part of a defence that did concede three, but did well. Threat in Newcastle box.

Decent 7

GEORGE CAMPBELL

Just shy of his centre-back partner for the skipper, who gave a typically wholehearted performance as we’ve come to expect. One or two wobbles, but mostly solid.

Committed 6

CONOR TOWNSEND

Returning left-back in for his first start since comeback and fared well. Showed legs and energy to get up and down flank and put in some very decent delivery.

Energy 6

HARRY WHITWELL

What a few weeks for this Baggies starlet. Deservedly given nod to continue on right side and he was totally fearless at St James’ Park against England star Hall. At times had too much quality. Helped win penalty.

Quality 8

RABBY NZINGOULA

Intriguing starter for a full debut as one of two central midfielders and he caught the eye and was almost marked higher. Some really excited deft touches, turns of pace and skill. Tired at times but one to watch.

Eye-catching 7

OUSMANE DIAKITE

Had the nod to continue over Molumby and put in a typically assured and combative display. Tireless in winning the ball back and did well in midfield battle.

Tireless 7

ISAAC PRICE

What a night. Albion star did not deserve to be on losing team. Two-goal hero again makes it four this week. Ingenuity for free-kick opener. Such class, poise and energy. What is he worth now?

Star 9

JIMMY-JAY MORGAN

Perhaps quieter than he would have liked at times but still a threat and still caught the eye against top-class defenders. A couple of nearly moments. Can be pleased.

Almost 7

BARNEY STEWART

A full debut for summer signing Stewart who looks clear and has some way to go, but gave his all and grafted hard all night. A tall presence, he battled physically. Would’ve done him well.

Useful 6

Substitutes:

Jayson Molumby (for Diakite, 71) Positive impact. Went close with late free-kick. 7

Callum Styles (for Nzingoula, 71) Used in midfield role and caught the eye 7

Felix Horn Myhre (for Morgan, 71) Busy and tricky. 6

Tammer Bany (for Whitwell, 80) Some neat tricks. 7

Ollie Bostock (for Price, 80) Tried to create. 6

Subs not used: O’Leary (gk), Phillips, Galves, Crowther.
