West Brom great escape example given as boss encourages transfer targets to pick The Hawthorns

Successful loanees have been few and far between at The Hawthorns in recent years

James Morrison pointed to Albion great escape hero Kieran Richardson among others as the boss delivered a message to would-be loan stars.

The Baggies are expected to be active in the loan market again this summer after the January addition of Danny Imray from Crystal Palace played a big role in Championship survival.

Morrison and Albion would like to re-sign right-back Imray, 22, after the attack-minded full-back bucked the trend of recent club loans who struggled to flourish.

The head coach told prospective targets why they should choose The Hawthorns as their destination, as he stressed fans are ready to throw their support behind any player in blue and white stripes.

"This football club is a great loan for any loan player coming in," Morrison said.

"I've seen good loans in the past. Harvey Barnes being one off the top of my head, Kieran Richardson all of those years ago, Dwight Gayle.

"There have been some and it's a great place to play football.

"If you perform then the fans will love you. The stadium, expectation in the division, it's all there for growth and to perform on a Saturday.

"It's a great place to play as a loan player."

Richardson, then 20, excelled in his first stint in senior football with basement boys Albion in the second half of 2004/05. He checked in from Manchester United as a winger but excelled in midfield under Bryan Robson and netted three goals in 12 games in the historic survival.

In the years since Matheus Pereira and Grady Diangana helped the Baggies to Premier League promotion in 2020, only Matt Clarke and Mikey Johnston have made any real impact.

Palace flyer Imray, meanwhile, shone as last season wore on. Morrison said: "It's been a perfect loan for him in terms of growth - growth is what you want from a loan.

"He's been attacking and that's what we wanted. He stepped up to the plate."
