West Brom encouraged to 'play smart' and steer clear of transfer silliness

Four new transfers have so far been recruited to bolster James Morrison’s squad.

Albion have been encouraged to box clever in the transfer window this summer by two-time promotion-winner Paul Robinson.

Groundwork is being put in for new head coach James Morrison to lead the Baggies into the 2026/27 campaign and deliver an improvement on last season’s struggle.

The club started business with a flurry last month with a trio of deals to bring in Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Barney Stewart and Carter Pinnington within days of each other. Veteran goalkeeper Matt Ingram checking in as back-up the following week. Director of football operations Ian Pearce is leading on recruitment.

Robinson, promotion-winner in 2004 and 2008, wants to see the Baggies continue to operate wisely with smart business moves in the market.

"You've got to look at the squad - what Mozza's done there played the players in their best positions,” Robinson told the Express & Star.

"It's a collective thing now. That stability needs to carry on into next season where you're buying the right players or you're bringing in the right players that are on free transfers.

"The club can't be silly and waste money. They've got to play smart with it all and do the right things.”

Chairman Shilen Patel wrote to supporters last and referenced the club’s improving finances before the new squad cost ratio (SCR) regulations. Albion are also safely clear of further sanctions after late March’s controversial profit and sustainability breach, which resulted in a two-point deduction.

"Obviously, the teams that are in the league as well, you're not going to compete with some of them on a financial level,” Robinson added.

“Mozza will understand what type of players he wants and the club have got to back him. That's what the club have got to do. They've got to support him in their decisions.

"I just hope the club support in the right way and again it's West Brom people in the background that need to help people like Mozza do a really good job. I really hope the club see that. I hope the club understand that.”
