West Brom boss explains why he has to 'keep pushing' exciting new recruit

The £1.3million summer recruit from Chelsea caught the eye and impressed Albion fans in the Algarve on Friday night.

Boss James Morrison is ready to keep pushing Jimmy-Jay Morgan to get the best out of the new Albion recruit.

Frontman Morgan, 20, has hit the ground running this summer having impressed in pre-season training and netted in each of his new club’s first two friendlies.

He opened the scoring in front of Albion fans in Albufeira in Friday’s 4-1 victory over Bromley with a fine finish.

Head coach Morrison has been very satisfied with the £1.3million signing’s impact - but added he will keep pushing the forward for more.

“Yes, I'm really pleased with him,” Morrison said of Morgan.

“There were some nice touches and great finish.

“I think I've just got to be pushing him. He needs pushing all the time, he needs reminding.

“He can switch off a little bit but undoubtedly you can see his qualities. He could have had a couple of goals.”

Morrison added that the former Southampton and Chelsea youngster has the “personality” it takes to be a big hit at Albion.

Morgan revealed last week that one of his idols growing up was former Baggies loan hero Romelu Lukaku.

The striker, who excelled on loan at Peterborough last season, has earned rave reviews with his level of finishing in training, but is also a player who enjoys to drop deeper, or out wide, and link play.

“He's got loads of attributes that I like to see - and he's got a personality,” Morrison added.

“You need good personality to play for this football club, and he's got it, so I'm really pleased with him.

“He's settled into the group, he's a confident boy, but I know he needs pushing.”

“I'm sure they will (take to him),” Morrison said of the fans. “If he continues the form he's shown, so I'm really happy with him.”

Morgan was his side’s standout performer in the comfortably victory over League One new boys Bromley in the south of Portugal, watched on by around 1,000 Baggies supporters.

Also on target were fellow strikers Aune Heggebo, youngster Jack Bray and new signing Barney Stewart.

Other impressive performers included attacker Isaac Price and midfielder Alex Mowatt, who wore the captain’s armband.

Price played a part in the two first-half goals and looked in the mood with strong running and skilful pieces of play.

The experienced Mowatt dictated the first half in which he featured. Morrison made a six changes at the interval and another five just after the hour. A more youthful second-half maintained the intensity and bagged two more late goals.

“With Isaac's running power, when he takes off - he's powerful,” Morrison said.

“I think Mowey, with his experience there in the middle of the pitch, just controlling it and when to pass, when to receive it, and then when to speed up the attacks. They played well tonight.”

Albion travelled home on Saturday and return to work this week to step up preparations with a clash at League Two Shrewsbury, with a big away following expected, next Saturday.
