'The right time' - Ryan Mason on Josh Griffiths call and one-word answer on if he faces a West Brom keeper decision for Tuesday

Albion head coach Ryan Mason revealed he felt it "the right time" to take Josh Griffiths out of the spotlight and hand him the chance to "become a better keeper".

Albion's No.1 was dropped to the bench for Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers with Joe Wildsmith selected as deputy for the first time in the Championship this season.

The decision could not help inspire the Baggies from their away woes as the hosts were gifted three goals from insipid defending to condemn the visitors to a sixth straight away defeat.

Eyebrows were raised as academy graduate Griffiths, 24, was pulled from the starting line-up at Loftus Road. Griffiths had made an error for Swansea's second goal in the previous weekend's home clash, which Mason's side rallied back to win. It was not Griffiths' first error of the campaign, but the shot-stopper has caught the eye at times with big saves in games.

Mason explained: "With Josh it's his first season at this level, and we just felt it's the right time to give him a breather from the intensity of it and an opportunity to work hard, to improve and become a better keeper."

Wildsmith, in his second season with Albion, could do nothing about QPR's first two goals on Saturday but was at fault along with defender George Campbell for the late third to undo any late hopes.

He was fortunate not to be at fault for another Rs goal as two-goal Rumarn Burrell rounded the keeper after hesitancy between Wildsmith and Chris Mepham but lifted over the crossbar from an open goal.

On Wildsmith's performance the head coach said: "I think my biggest concern at the moment is the team. It isn't about individuals and individual situations because we're in a moment where we're not winning games at football away from home.

"We're not even getting results (draws). So that's the primary concern. That's the main focus."

Asked if the head coach has a decision to make on Tuesday's starting goalkeeper at Southampton after dropping Griffiths and on the back of Wildsmith's display, Mason replied with one word: "No."
