'The players are buying in' - Reasons to feel upbeat for West Brom boss despite tough late midweek sting

Encouraged boss James Morrison is feeling buoyed from the 'buy in' received from Albion's squad as he leads the club's rescue mission.

Baggies fans were left gut-wrenched by Southampton's last-gasp equaliser in Wednesday night's 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns that kept Albion in the drop zone and still without a Championship win in 2026.

A quick turnaround sees promotion-chasing Hull City visit the Black Country on Saturday and Morrison feels this week's two draws against Sheffield United and the Saints have showed a response from the low of defeat in his opener away to Oxford.

"There could be many things with the Oxford game," Morrison said. "Just losing the manager (the sacked Eric Ramsay), having two or three days of turnaround again.

"You can see that having the clarity of myself and having time on the training pitch and having the ideas and the players buying into it and the belief.

"You could see that on Wednesday. Hopefully we continue with the structure but we've also got to look at the physicality and respect some players like Daryl (Dike) who hasn't gone back-to-back games in three years or something. We'll see what's best for Saturday."

Dike led the line with strike partner Aune Heggebo again in midweek and managed almost 80 minutes.

Midfielder Ousmane Diakite limped off with cramp late on before the Saints' stoppage-time equaliser through Cyle Larin. Morrison's defensive options were threadbare with Krystian Bielik, Chris Mepham and Charlie Taylor unavailable and a returning Nat Phillips only fit enough for the bench.

Bielik (shoulder) will be assessed for Hull on Saturday, though Alfie Gilchrist shone at centre-back against Southampton.

"They're feeling it," added Morrison. "I told them to be disappointed tonight but we'll come back in and look at the positives and get ready for Saturday because in the end it could turn out a good point."

The Baggies sit second-bottom heading into this weekend but still just a point from safety with nine fixtures remaining.
