Ryan Mason's wishlist for final West Brom friendly of the summer

Albion sign off for their summer friendly business with Saturday lunchtime's clash against Spanish visitors Rayo Vallecano at The Hawthorns.

We address some subjects Baggies head coach Ryan Mason will be keen to check off before the real thing starts the following weekend against Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

Clean sheet

A tale as old as time is that results do not matter when it comes to friendlies - and that will remain the case.

But Mason will not want to see his side continue to ship goals at the rate they have been, including the six against two League One opponents recently.

Albion have conceded goals both directly from balls into their box - from set-pieces and open play - and also while in possession in their own defensive third, while trying to build play and start attacking moves.

The head coach would ideally like to eradicate both as best possible, though bumps in the road at this early stage will continue. Basics like losing goals to balls into the box should not continue.

Just one of five pre-season friendlies so far - the first, behind-closed-doors against Port Vale - has yielded a clean sheet and one against the Spaniard would do the job.

Increased minutes for new boys

Defender and earliest recruit Nat Phillips has been a mainstay of pre-season so far but Albion's other two new faces are playing catch-up.

Striker Aune Heggebo and defender George Campbell are at different stages at they build up fitness.

Norwegian £4.7million recruit Heggebo enjoyed a very welcome 90 minutes at Lincoln's Sincil Bank last weekend. He may not have overly stood out but those minutes will be priceless for him. The domestic season in his homeland was ongoing when Heggebo made the switch - so he should not be far away physically, though will have to get to grips with the tempo in England.

Defender Campbell is in a similar boat in that his MLS season with Montreal in Canada was midway through. He has just 45 minutes of Albion football behind him, though, and in a more unrecognised left-back role, so it is a big afternoon for Campbell too.

Unscathed Maja

Arguably Albion's biggest win from the 4-2 humbling from the Imps were the 15 minutes or so under the belt for striker Josh Maja.

The Baggies' campaign never really recovered last season when top goalscorer Maja succumbed to a stress-related injury in his leg which required surgery in January.

The route back to fitness has been an arduous one. Any glimmer of him featuring half-fit in last season's play-offs was put to bed as Albion collapsed under Tony Mowbray and Maja has worked exceptionally hard this summer to be at this point. An increased load on Saturday, of perhaps 30 or 45 minutes, should serve him the world of good.

Fellow striker Daryl Dike missed out at Sincil Bank last time out due to what Albion reported as a minor knock. Dike has had decent pre-season exposure given his own awful injury history and it would be good to see him against the Spaniards.

Crowd encouragement

The outcome or scoreline does not matter generally but when it comes to signing off for the final friendly, in front of some of your home support for the first time, leaving a decent first impression may be useful.

Away fans may not have been overly enthused while leaving Blackpool and Lincoln recently but Mason's troops did put in a strong performance against high-level opposition in the shape of Dynamo Kyiv in Austria.

To do so in front of The Hawthorns faithful on the eve of the season could be a shot in the arm - even if it is not enough to beat the side who finished eighth in La Liga last term.

Mason will be keen to see patterns of play, attacks building from deep and overloads out wide - all things worked on this summer - come to fruition where possible, as well as some standout individual displays.
