James Morrison's 'pretty sure' assessment after West Brom goalkeeper's injury as boss makes 'naughty' claim

Albion are hopeful the ankle injury suffered by Max O'Leary in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Hull is not too serious.

The Baggies goalkeeper hobbled off midway through the second half to be replaced by Josh Griffiths after he was caught by Tigers defenders John Egan.

Home boss James Morrison, who celebrated a first win of his current tenure in charge with the excellent display, was left unhappy by the "naughty" late challenge that left his shot-stopper unable to continue.

Albion will discover the extent of the keeper's damage after testing, but Morrison is hopeful it is not serious.

"I felt it was a bit of a naughty tackle when I seen it in real time," Morrison said.

"I haven't seen it back, but I think it was just a studs down the ankle (challenge), and he might have just twisted, but I'm pretty sure he'd be fine."

Egan was not punished with a caution by referee Josh Smith.

January recruit O'Leary was on his way to a first clean sheet in seven games when he departed The Hawthorns clash after the hour.

It offered his replacement, academy graduate Griffiths, a first opportunity of Championship action since January's home 5-0 capitulation against Norwich under Eric Ramsay.

Griffiths had little to do as Albion bagged a second goal through Aune Heggebo minutes later, to add to Josh Maja's opener, before Isaac Price put the seal on a fine victory late on.

It was a first league success of 2026 for relegation-threatened Albion and the first win in 14 attempts was enough to lift Morrison's side of the second tier drop zone by a single place and point.

O'Leary is now fighting to be fit for next weekend's clash at his boyhood club Bristol City, where he departed in January after two decades of service.

The trip to Ashton Gate is the Baggies' final clash before the last international break of the campaign, with just seven clashes remaining thereafter from early April.
