James Morrison offers insight into West Brom's Jayson Molumby right midfield experiment in Millwall draw
Eyebrows were raised when Jayson Molumby started on the right of Albion’s midfield for the Millwall clash.
James Morrison felt Jayson Molumby did a job for the team as the latest incumbent in Albion’s right midfield role.
The Baggies are short on options to operate in the position since losing club captain Jed Wallace to a calf injury last week.
Wallace joins fellow wide men Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston on the touchline leaving options few and far between for Morrison.
Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba and Isaac Price have been used in the two games since and it was the turn of Molumby, a central midfielder by trade, against Millwall on Friday night, where The Hawthorns hosts put in a gutsy performance and came on strong but were unable to sneak a winner.
“I felt on Monday (at Blackburn) we were competitive,” Morrison said. “So with the opposition I wanted to be competitive.
“And we play with our wingers inside at the moment, with the two strikers, so I felt like he could do that.
“I felt Jayson got better as the game went on, and he got stretched a bit, and he could find some space and run and use his energy, and be there for second balls.
“He did a job for the team.”
Morrison has maintained his 4-4-2 system since beginning a seven-match unbeaten run at the helm with the draw at Sheffield United last month.
A lack of natural width, however, has seen the likes of Price and now Molumby operate in a more inverted role on the right and left side of midfield.
Against Millwall Molumby drifted inside to help colleagues Alex Mowatt and Ousmane Diakite where possible. Price did likewise from the left, but had more onus to break forward.
Full-backs Danny Imray and Callum Styles are attacking outlets and instructed to offer width on the overlap when possible.
Molumby had his side’s best opening in front of goal to bag a late winner as Morrison’s men came on strong against the Lions.
A corner from the left was taken quickly and delivered by Callum Styles, helped on by George Campbell and dropped to Molumby, who settled himself inside the six-yard box before a low strike was somehow saved by Anthony Patterson to leave hands on head for all of an Albion persuasion.
“It was similar to his goal against Southampton,” said Morrison, who was heading and kicking every chance in the technical area. “Jayson's really good at picking the loose ball up.
“I think we'll have to put it down to a great save from the goalie.”
Morrison said a late winner would have been “beautiful scenes” but was not meant to be.
