James Morrison dishes out praise for 'only bright thing' from West Brom misery

Albion prospect Ollie Bostock has been hailed for grasping his chance amid doom and gloom at The Hawthorns.

Teen academy graduate Bostock was declared the only positive from Saturday's woeful 2-1 defeat at second-bottom Oxford United by boss James Morrison.

The Wales youth international captain, who recently turned 19, netted his first senior goal but the Baggies were unable to claw back a point.

It was just a fifth first-team appearance for Bostock, who hails from Lichfield, and he has been bright every time he has been called into the fold.

"That's the only bright thing you can take from it, really," said interim boss Morrison.

"Ollie Bostock delivered again, he got his chance, he's been waiting for it for a long time.

"He's been with us all season, and every time he's played he's looked bright."

Bostock was handed a senior debut as a late substitute in a miserable 3-0 defeat at Millwall in early October.

He shone in a rare victory, via a penalty shootout, in the FA Cup in Swansea in January, where he laid on an assist and converted the winning spot-kick.

His first senior start came in the next round of the competition at Norwich, where had bright moments despite the Cup exit.

Bostock has captained Wales at under-19 level and could be set for more Albion action due to the worrying ankle injury picked up by wing star Mikey Johnston in Oxford.

Johnston could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Youngster Bostock, who is London-born but moved to the West Midlands as a child, has trained with the first-team all season. He was lined up for a possible loan move in January, with interest in his services from the lower league, but was kept due to being considered a squad option.

He signed a new extended contract last September until June 2027.
