'It's a gift. It's a gift. It's a gift' - Ryan Mason takes aim at West Brom errors in another away defeat
Frustrated boss Ryan Mason hit out at costly individual errors as Albion once again suffered on the road.
The Baggies were beaten 1-0 at Hull for an eighth successive defeat away from home as Oli McBurnie turned in the decisive moment from a penalty needlessly given away by Nat Phillips on the stroke of half-time.
Under-fire boss Mason criticised another "gift" presented to the opposition away from home after Albion had near-dominated the first period at MKM Stadium and spurned two gilt-edged chances.
Albion finished the game with 10 men after Alfie Gilchrist's dismissal with 15 minutes left for a challenge replays showed the right-back made no contact with Liam Millar.
"The most frustrating thing is the gift again," a frustrated Mason said. "It's a gift, it's a gift, it's a gift.
"I think the first half, worst case, you come in at 0-0 regardless of the opportunities we missed and the type of game we played and how well we played in my opinion, but again, it's difficult to accept because I think when you concede goals or have moments in games where it's a structural thing or a principle thing that you can fix, it's the coach's responsibility and I take that all day long.
"I think we've conceded far too many goals where it's nothing to do with that, especially recently, and we've gifted the opposition a discipline or a mistake, individual error, and the goal that loses the game is incredible."
Centre-back Phillips, who was captain with three others missing, raised his arm while jostling from a corner deep into stoppage time.
Albion struggled to get going after the setback as Hull made a change in the interval and improved to climb to fourth after the break.
Mason said he had no complaints of the penalty decision given against his side by Ruebyn Ricardo, but felt the official had a poor afternoon.
"We have to take responsibility and I'm a first person, I always take responsibility for my players, for the situation we're in, absolutely," Mason added.
"That's my job and that's why I'm here, to take responsibility for everything that happens.
"At the same time, we all need to take shared responsibility for certain moments and it's disappointing to lose a game of football because of a type of situation like that and it's tougher, it's tougher as a coach because I think if there's something that you can fix and something that you've not given the players, then ultimately that's our job, to give them as much as possible, but we didn't lose the game because of that."
Asked if he felt let down by players making continual and costly errors, he said: "We feel it, we feel it as a group and you can certainly feel it.
"You need to learn, you need to learn from moments in games and right now we're being punished massively, massively for situations that happen and, yes, it needs to change."
