'I can't believe I've done that' - James Morrison ready for stick from pals after West Brom celebrations
James Morrison admitted he got carried away in the wake of the win.
Albion boss James Morrison is ready to ‘take some stick’ for getting carried away in his side’s celebrations after winning at Preston.
The Baggies head coach, who is in place until the end of the season, was sheepish when asked about his emotional celebrations after his side pocketed a crucial 2-0 victory.
Morrison prefers to maintain a typically understated manner but admitted he got lost in the joyous scenes with 4,000 travelling supporters after Albion made it eight matches unbeaten and put five points between themselves and the Championship relegation zone.
The 39-year-old former midfielder delighted supporters when he delivered three fist-pumps, each to a deafening roar from the travelling fans in Lancashire.
Morrison smiled: “I'm going to get some stick for that! Yeah... I can't believe I've done that.
“Well, you get carried away don't you? So I'll be ready for the stick.”
Morrison followed suit with goalscorer Daryl Dike, who added a late clinching second after Josh Maja’s early opener, the ringleader when it came to the full-time celebrations.
For Dike it was a first goal in almost 12 months after his latest Hawthorns injury hell.
Albion’s entire squad joined in with the celebrations, particularly attacker Karlan Grant, who marked his return from three months out injured with a late cameo.
“It sums up the feeling, I guess,” Morrison added. “You can see the emotion and the meaning for everyone, the players and the fans.”
Dike emerged from the bench with 20 minutes to go to net within seven minutes for his first goal of the season.
Having started and caught the eye last time out against Millwall, Morrison opted to recall Maja to the starting line-up but Dike certainly made his mark.
His emphatic finish led to a huge roar and outpouring of emotion both from team-mates and supporters behind the goal.
“I think Daryl’s smile is bigger than anybody’s! I was really pleased with him,” Morrison added.
“I thought his performances might’ve granted him a start but it was a decision I made and I went with Bo (Aune Heggebo) because he’s our top goalscorer and in a big game like that why wouldn’t you go with your top goalscorer?
“But he (Dike) will play a big part until the end of the season. I think the fans will have to change the song about being on the pitch! Hopefully it’ll kickstart him in terms of scoring goals.”
An away following of 4,000 added to the 7,500 travelling fans at Blackburn’s Ewood Park in Lancashire for a cagey 0-0 draw just a fortnight ago.
Morrison said of the support: “I talked about giving them something back and apologised for the boring 0-0 draw and that was for them.”
Victory on the road was the perfect response to a testing week for Albion after it emerged they had been charged by the EFL for an alleged breach of financial regulations. A hearing to decide the outcome is expected to take place this month.
