Eric Ramsay clarifies vision for West Brom's Mikey Johnston and does not see a wide player 'label'
Boss Eric Ramsay is not interested in labelling players and wants Albion dangermen like Mikey Johnston to be as big a threat as possible.
Baggies winger Johnston is the Championship's joint-leading creator of goals and tops the assist charts with Ipswich's Marcelino Nunez on nine.
The Republic of Ireland international, typically a left winger but having played on the right flank recently, started at right wing-back in Ramsay's first game at the helm on Friday night in the late defeat to Middlesbrough.
Ahead of Tuesday night's crunch meeting with with fellow lowly side Norwich, head coach Ramsay insists he does not label the positions and when he starts an attacking winger in a wing-back role he expects them to be threatening in the final third.
"Completely," Ramsay said when asked about his desire to see Johnston in attacking areas. "And I think the devil's in the detail with that.
"It's so important that you have enough control of the ball to make sure that we can find our players playing on the side of the pitch - without giving them a label - because that's not really not how I see it when we've got the ball.
"I want the wide players to play as wingers. I want us to have enough control that they can find themselves on the backline and I think in the first half when you saw switches of play to Mikey Johnston and he's one-v-one down the side of the box, he's a real threat in those situations and over the course of recent weeks has been.
"So it's a case of making sure that you as I said you put the player in his most optimum position as often as possible."
Johnston, 26, was a threat in Albion's bright start against Boro but was subsequently forced back. He switched to the left flank on the hour when Ramsay made a double substitution and tactical tweak as his side fell 2-0 down.
Tonight's clash at The Hawthorns sees 19th-placed Albion face improving Norwich in 22nd.
Ramsay said of Norwich: "It's a good team with good players and the position is certainly false in that sense.
"So we've got to make sure that we turn around quickly, we really learn the lessons of Friday."
