West Brom v Watford - Match preview

The last few weeks have thrown up a situation that John Swift has rarely found himself in this season.

The play-maker suffered a calf injury back in October that initially kept him out for six weeks.

He endured a stop-start return to the side and then in recent weeks he has had to settle for a spot on the Albion bench.

But he has come on to provide useful contributions in a 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town and he kept his cool just three minutes after being introduced at Millwall on Friday to net a spot-kick and rescue a point.

And boss Carlos Corberan has revealed that Swift’s display has given him a selection poser ahead of today’s clash with Watford.

“When the team is competing well and others in that position, you don’t need to be patient but use that opportunity and he made a good step.”

Asked whether Swift’s contribution has posed him a question on a starting place, he added: “Yes, of course.”

For Friday’s goalscorer himself, he has admitted he has been frustrated with being on the sidelines.

But Swift and the other Albion players who are having to sit it out from the start, all have the mindset that it is the team that comes first.

He said: “Everyone knows it is not nice to be sat on the bench, or not come on or not travel. But everyone’s minds are in the right direction.

“There are players who haven’t made the squad who could be easily starting on Monday.

“It is important no matter where you play that you train right, so when you get the chance off the bench you can make an impact.

“It is about keeping the right mindset. It is not nice to be out of the line-up.

“My injury came at a bad time as I was in good form and I have not managed to get back to the way I was playing before my injury.

“The players in front of me are performing, which is the main thing. And the main thing is we get the three points every time we play and if that means me not playing, that is the way it is.

“You just have to have the right mindset and take the chance when you can.”

Albion welcome Watford to The Hawthorns with the gap to seventh-placed Coventry now seven points.

The Sky Blues do have a game in hand over the sides above them but Swift insists the picture can change a lot over the Easter weekend double header.

Swift has pointed to Albion’s home form but also their efforts away. Earlier this year questions were raised over their form on the road but the draw at Millwall made it six unbeaten on their travels.

He added: “Lots can change. This was a good point if we back it up. It is a crazy league with loads of games and we want to take as many points as possible.

“We are back at home and have good form, but away recently too.

“We haven’t always got three points but good results against the likes of Ipswich and tough sides and hopefully we can replicate that.”
