Town skipper Liam Lawrence - There will be no premature celebrations

Shrewsbury Town skipper Liam Lawrence insists that there will be no premature celebrating as the team closes in on promotion from League Two.

Micky Mellon's men strengthened their claim for automatic promotion with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge on Good Friday.

Town, who are second in the league, were seven points clear of the play-off places prior to this afternoon's trip to Mansfield Town. They were also just a point behind leaders Burton Albion with only six games remaining.

Lawrence admitted that his team were in an enviable position but added: "We are keeping our feet on the ground, that is for sure.

"The win on Friday was brilliant but we can't get too carried away.

"We have got a good set of lads but some of them are young so we need to make sure that everyone is grounded and take it game by game now."

Lawrence, 33, did well to take part against Dagenham, having been laid low by illness for most of the week leading up to the game.

He said: "I was ill Sunday and Monday, I had a bit of flu Wednesday and on Thursday I was still not right. But luckily I managed to get out there."

Lawrence showed no ill effects against the Daggers, providing assists for both Town goals, which came from Connor Goldson.

The first saw the centre-back nod home a Lawrence corner-kick and the second saw him finish a free-kick from his skipper.

Lawrence said: "If we put the ball in a good area, nine times out of 10 one of our big lads will get on the end of it.

"The second goal was quite good.

I just said 'I am going to put it on the corner of the six yard box' and credit to him for getting on the end of it."
