Saturday's 1-0 victory over Burton Albion made it 26 home games without defeat in all competitions, equalling the club's previous best mark set in 1978-79. More importantly, it helped Shrewsbury back into the top two for the first time in six months.

And boss Graham Turner and captain Ian Sharps, who was Saturday's match-winner, have urged Town to maintain their long-unbeaten home record as they chase an elusive promotion.

Commenting on the unbeaten record, which dates back to March 1 last year, Turner said: "We have had almost two different sides – the one for the final months of last season and then this season.

"If you are going to be successful, it has to be a fortress and that's what it's looking like for us at the moment."

Town will set a new record should they avoid defeat against promotion rivals Cheltenham a week tomorrow.

But Sharps admitted promotion rather than landmarks is the key factor during the run-in.

"It's a nice thing to look back on at the end of the season but only if we can say we have got promotion and a record," he said.

"Promotion comes before any records."

Town's hand was strengthened on Saturday with Southend, Cheltenham, Crawley and Torquay – their rivals for a top-three finish – all failing to notch victories.

But Turner insisted Shrewsbury must focus on their own results during the run-in.

"The important thing is we continue to do our thing," added the boss.

"But obviously it helps when you look at one or two others that have dropped points, so we leapfrog over a couple of teams to go second with a game in hand on the two immediately below us.

"It was a good afternoon's work and it went well elsewhere for us."
