Shrewsbury Town striker enjoying the moment as he finds his form

George Lloyd scored the decisive penalty in Saturday lunchtime’s 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers.

George Lloyd insisted he is ‘really enjoying his football’ after hitting a decent run of scoring form alongside Shrewsbury Town’s recent improvement.

The 26-year-old striker notched the match-winning penalty in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Bristol Rovers, his third goal in a run of six league games of which Salop have won three and drawn two.

He also saw a legitimate goal incorrectly ruled out for offside at Exeter seven days earlier, and feels in confident mood having lost his place earlier in the season.

“I don’t set myself any goal targets, I just want to keep going and enjoying my football and that’s definitely the case at the moment,” he says. “Obviously I came out of the team for three games towards the start of the season but just worked hard, kept my head down and got myself back in.

“I’m really enjoying being part of this team at this moment in my career.

“In this league anyone can beat anyone, but when we are on it, like we were against Bristol Rovers and have been recently, we will get results.

“The Exeter game was frustrating but generally the last few games have been encouraging.

“I think when you keep putting good performances in, come the end of the season the performances look after the results.

“And we’ve got such a togetherness in our changing room at the moment and I can't see that going.

“Everyone's got each other's backs - staff and players - and it's just great to be a part of.”

It had been so long since Shrewsbury had been awarded a penalty in the league – 68 games stretching back to a 3-1 defeat at Peterborough in March 2025 – that no one was particularly sure who was going to take it.

Lloyd made sure he was well placed to take on the responsibility.

“I think a few of the lads I wanted it, and as soon as the pen got given, I just hunted for the ball and made sure I made sure I got it,” he says.

“I think Cookie (Jay Turner-Cooke) wanted it, Kian wanted it, JD (Josh Davison) kind of wanted it.

“It was just important to make sure I scored!

“I have only taken them before in penalty shootouts but I’d love to take another – let’s hope it doesn’t take another 70-odd games!”
