Shrewsbury Town notebook: Takeaways from first home friendly
Josh Ruffels scored the winner as Salop beat Everton Under-21 - some thoughts.
Shrewsbury Town secured back-to-back pre-season wins with victory over Everton Under-21s - here are some early takeaways.
Hoole and Lloyd
There was no action for Luca Hoole or George Lloyd.
Lloyd was withdrawn midway through the first half of Town’s win over FC Isle of Man on Sunday, but completed running and ball work before the clash.
It comes after boss Gavin Cowan said the injury was not believed to be anything too serious.
Hoole, however, watched on and did not take part in the pre-match warm-up, remaining sidelined.
Game thoughts
Town grew into the game as the first half progressed, creating more chances and testing the Everton goal. At times, though, they perhaps lacked that cutting edge in the final third.
The visitors started the second period brightly, but Town took their first real attacking opportunity of the half brilliantly. Josh Ruffels sparked the move with some excellent work down the left and a low cross before getting into the box to head home the winner.

It was good to see Ruffels on the scoresheet and smiling after signing his new deal. Retaining his experience could prove an important piece of business for Town.
Jay Turner-Cooke looked lively after coming on in the second half and played a key role as Town created several more chances that could easily have extended the lead. Youngster Jeval Thompson-McKenzie also impressed with another bright cameo.
Armband
Sam Stubbs wore the captain’s armband for the opening hour and was commanding at the heart of the defence, constantly organising those around him.
Will Boyle then took over captaincy duties after replacing Stubbs.
Both remain strong contenders to inherit the armband, with Town yet to confirm who will succeed John Marquis as club captain following his departure.
Arkell Jude-Boyd
Town’s new wing-back looked a real threat going forward, delivering several dangerous crosses into the box and consistently finding team-mates in advanced areas.
Jude-Boyd also cut inside from the right to curl a shot narrowly over the crossbar, earning warm applause from the supporters for another encouraging display.
Academy graduate Isaac England also enjoyed some positive moments in midfield, using the ball well, switching play effectively and helping Town control possession.
