The 29-year-old was given his break at the third tier of English football in the summer of 2009 after a move to Oldham but picked up a serious hip injury and did not play a first-team game for the Latics.

Now he has been handed a fresh chance to shine at League One and the utility man is determined to make up for lost time with Town.

"The opportunity to play League One football was a big thing," said Purdie, who spent last season at Hereford and moved to the Greenhous Meadow yesterday along with Cheltenham midfielder Luke summerfield.

"I got the chance at Oldham a few years ago but broke down with a hip injury on the first day of pre-season.

"I had three operations and ended up being out for over a year.

"The next time I played was for Hereford (on loan) the following October and I scored twice on my comeback, which was a bit surreal.

"Every professional with the right mindset wants to play at the highest level they can and I'm confident I can do that in League One."

Purdie, at home playing in either full-back position or across midfield, will link up with his new team-mates tomorrow when they return to pre-season training.

And he is excited at the prospect of working under Turner once again after playing under the manager for five years at Hereford.

"I got released from Leicester as a youngster and the manager gave me my chance," added Purdie.

"He knows my personality and ability and I'm delighted to be working under him again now."

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury's League One fixture list has had three changes in the last 24 hours.

The final game before Christmas at Bury has been moved forward a day to Friday, December 21 while the Easter trip to Carlisle is now on Good Friday, March 29, at 3pm.

The two switches follow on from the home clash with Walsall going back to Sunday, October 14 to accommodate live Sky coverage.
