Shrewsbury Town loss takes gloss off Graham Burke's first strike

Striker Graham Burke said that the occasion of his first ever senior goal last night had been soured by Shrewsbury's 4-1 home defeat to Oldham.

Burke, who is currently on loan at the Greenhous Meadow from Premier League outfit Aston Villa, scored his first senior goal in the 45th minute of yesterday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round tie.

But the 19-year-old Ireland Under-21 international said the experience had been tainted by the heavy defeat, which saw Town's dreams of a march towards Wembley dashed at the first hurdle.

He said: "I'm happy about scoring the goal, but I'm not too happy about the result. We are out of the competition. Individually it's probably alright, but overall I won't really take anything from it."

But Burke conceded that the 81-minute run out will have done him good as he aims to stake a claim for more starts in blue and amber.

He said: "I have been on the bench for three games so it was good for me to get a bit of game-time and the goal came from it, so we will have to see what happens next week.

"Whether I sit on the bench or whether I play, I don't know. I try to stake a claim for myself every day in training. I try to impress the gaffer and it is down to him if he wants to put me in the side."

Burke added that the team would be looking to make amends for last night's defeat when they return to league action against Crawley Town a week on Saturday.
