Huge stakes for Shrewsbury Town in Tranmere Rovers showdown

Shrewsbury must rediscover form against struggling Tranmere to avoid a tense run-in.

It’s a game of fine margins - but the result could shape how Shrewsbury Town’s season ends.

Victory over Tranmere Rovers would not only end Salop’s goal drought and four-game losing streak, but also provide much-needed breathing space at the bottom of the table at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Defeat, however, could drag Town back into the immediate fight for survival and set up a nervy final five games of the season.

Tranmere arrive in poor form, winless in eight matches - losing seven of those - and sliding towards the drop zone.

Yet Salop are also struggling. A fourth consecutive defeat at Newport County last weekend was a difficult watch at times, with little attacking quality and few chances created.

Despite their dip in form, the overall picture remains relatively stable for now. Their earlier resurgence lifted them clear of danger, but they must now rediscover that momentum to take a significant step towards securing their Football League status and avoid any late anxiety.

Mentality and quality were key themes for boss Gavin Cowan following the defeat at Newport.

“What it's not is it's not a lack of effort,” he said. “The players are giving their all.

“However, was there total focus and concentration today at times? Probably not. Was the application where I wanted it to be?

“They're giving their all, but you have to have quality. We really lacked quality in the second half.

“When we've had really big moments and big games against big teams, it surprises me. But it comes down to bravery.”

Much has changed since Shrewsbury’s heavy 4-0 defeat at Tranmere earlier in the season, when a 10-man Town side were well beaten at Prenton Park.

Both sides now have new managers, and Cowan is determined his team finish the campaign strongly rather than stumble over the line.

Saturday’s meeting will be Tranmere’s first visit to the Croud Meadow since 2020, when the sides played out an entertaining 3-2 contest.

Goals, however, have been hard to come by of late. Salop have failed to score in four matches, while Tranmere are without a goal in three.

At times this season, Town have found ways to grind out results when it matters, and regardless of the performance, three points here would be invaluable.

There are fitness concerns over Tom Sang, who was forced off before half-time at Newport, with Cowan admitting he would be a big miss.

Bradley Ihionvien has returned from injury and featured twice from the bench, while John Marquis also made his comeback last weekend alongside Taylor Perry and Josh Ruffels.

Cowan now has decisions to make, particularly in attack, with more options available as Town look to rediscover their cutting edge.

“We need to be better going forward,” Cowan added. “I lost count of the amount of crosses that we turned down.

“We were speaking at half-time about just getting shots off. With the wind, just get shots off, hit the target.

“We’re turning things down, which is surprising for me, because players want to do that all week in training.

“The first thing they want to do is get out of their feet and hit the target. We're having to almost talk them into it.”

Salop sit 19th, nine points clear of the relegation zone heading into the clash, with Tranmere a place below them and four points above the bottom two. Victory would give Town a vital boost heading into the final five games.
