Shrewsbury Town 1, Crewe 0

Luke Summerfield's header earned Shrewsbury a morale-boosting success - and their first win in six games - against local rivals Crewe.

Town weathered early pressure from the Railwaymen with Julian Bennett and Joe Jacobson making last-ditch clearances from their own six-yard box.

And they survived penalty appeals when Finnish striker Lauri Dalla Valle tumbled in the box as he stretched to finish off a Mathias Pogba header.

But Graham Turner's side began to find some joy down the flanks and Crewe looked vulnerable coping with their former striker Rodgers and Marvin Morgan. And when the latter skipped clear of Matt Tootle down the left, Summerfield was running in to greet the frontman's hanging cross with a downward header for Town's 43rd-minute opener.

Morgan should have extended the lead a minute after the restart when Rodgers slipped him in behind the Crewe defence, but he blasted his shot against the body of keeper Alan Martin.

Summerfield's penalty appeals fell on deaf ears as he crashed a shot against Pogba.

But Town's win was never guaranteed while the advantage was so slender and hearts were in mouths when Alex substitute Max Clayton volleyed just past the far post.
