The second period was more evenly-contested with both sides denied by a linesman’s offside flag.
James Collins had a chance for Shrewsbury in the second minute when he threw himself at a fine right-wing cross from Jermaine Grandison but failed narrowly to make contact.
And five minutes later Scott Vernon fired wide with a shot on the turn after good work wide on the left from Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro.
Kilmarnock’s first chance arrived on 17 minutes when Craig Slater’s cross from the right found Josh Magennis, who fired high and wide.
Kilmarnock keeper Craig Samson made a near-post save from Scott Vernon after he beat the visitors’ offside trap.
And then the woodwork denied the hosts when Collins saw a head strike the inside of Samson’s left-hand upright and run to safety from a James Wesolowski cross.
Five minutes into the second half, Shrewsbury keeper Jayson Leutwiler was finally called into action when he made a smart diving save to keep out a Magennis header after a free-kick from Jamie Hammill.
Kilmarnock had an effort ruled out for offside when Magennis netted a rebound after Leutwiler fumbled a Rory McKenzie shot, although the ‘goal’ was announced inside the stadium.
Ryan Woods had a strike for the Shrews ruled out for offside and then substitute James Caton saw his effort ricochet wide for a corner.
