Shrewsbury Town’s director of football Micky Moore has held positive discussions with skipper Luke Leahy about his plans for the club.

Leahy was an instrumental figure during Steve Cotterill’s tenure as manager.

The 30-year-old arrived at Shrewsbury as a wing-back but was soon turned into a midfielder by the former boss, and he ended up scoring 12 goals across all competitions last season and winning the club’s player-of-the-season award for the second successive year.

Leahy had a good relationship with Cotterill, putting out a tweet thanking him when he left the club last week.

He said: “Some of my best football has come in these past two years, also a change of position and captaincy. On & off the pitch you’ve helped me enormously. Thank you Gaffer.”

But Town are now heading into a new era, with Moore as director of football.

Leahy and Moore have met, with Moore outlining his vision for where the club is going – and the Shropshire Star understands these talks were positive, with Leahy set to be a key figure for Town again next season.

Moore’s first job since arriving at Town is to recruit a new head coach – and the Shropshire Star understands former TNS manager Anthony Limbrick has not been shortlisted for an interview.

Meanwhile, Town will welcome Championship side Coventry City to the Croud Meadow for a pre-season friendly in July.

The Sky Blues narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League when they suffered a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to Luton Town in the play-off final at Wembley.

The clash with Mark Robins’ side will take place on July 22 (3pm), and will be the first time the Sky Blues have visited the Meadow since a League One clash in 2019.

That day, current Salop midfielder Jordan Shipley gave Coventry the lead with Scott Golbourne levelling, before Shaun Whalley netted a late winner.

The latest pre-season announcement comes after it was confirmed newly-promoted League Two side Notts County will travel to the Meadow on July 29.

It was also announced that draws for the Carabao Cup, and EFL Trophy will be made on the same day as the League One fixtures are released on Thursday, June 22 – which is a week today.

Portsmouth last night announced the permanent signing of Christian Saydee from Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee. Saydee scored seven goals in 38 appearances for Town on loan from the Cherries last season.
