“I’m prolific” - Defender Sam Stubbs jokes after latest Shrewsbury Town winner

Sam Stubbs reflects on his winning goal for Shrewsbury Town against Tranmere Rovers

Goal hero Sam Stubbs joked he has become “prolific” for Shrewsbury Town after netting two winners in recent weeks.

Stubbs’ second-half header against Tranmere on Friday means he has scored Salop’s last two goals - with it their first since his dramatic winner at Chesterfield.

Those strikes are the defender’s only two of the season, but they have delivered crucial victories in Town’s bid to retain their Football League status.

“I'm prolific,” the 27-year-old laughed.

“It has been something we've spoken about, we haven't scored enough goals.

“We've created not loads, but enough. But it's hard. The level we play at, the pitches at times, I'm not blaming them, we could do the process better.

“I think we've been a little bit unlucky last week. It was a bit of a non-start again with the conditions, it’s not easy, but we gave ourselves a chance.

“Luckily enough, a bit of quality off the cross, right place, right time from myself. I thought we could have scored a couple more as well, really.”

His decisive header came after a speculative late first-half effort, when Stubbs blazed high and wide - something he admitted he had been joking about afterwards.

“Terrible,” he added. “I won't be doing that again - just use my head.”

Stubbs joined Shrewsbury on a two-year deal last summer and started each of Salop’s first 19 league games before being frozen out of the side.

However, he returned immediately under Gavin Cowan and has started all but one of the last six matches.

His goal against Tranmere ended Salop’s four-game scoring drought, and while he was delighted to get on the scoresheet, the clean sheet meant just as much.

“I'm a bit boring when it comes to goals,” Stubbs said. “They're great, they're nice, but the clean sheet's 10 times better.

“It's something you pride yourself on as a defender, especially centre-half. So, I am made up to get that, and then everything else is just a bonus.”

His header from Kevin Berkoe’s cross crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, though Stubbs was quick to play down his role.

“It was more bad marking than anything I'd done really,” he insisted.

“I just found myself free and just caught it well. When you're head it at times, you don't really see it because it comes off your head.

“It hit the bar and I thought it was going to come out with a bit of bad luck.

“It's obviously nice to help, but this is probably a bit of a boring answer, I am made up for the clean sheet.

“It's something you pride yourself on as a defender, and I'm happy for the three centre halves - Boyle, myself and Ruffs.”
