Paul Robinson backing Joe Riley to star

Shrewsbury Town new-boy Joe Riley has been backed to star for the club next season – and could one day challenge for a return to the Premier League.

Birmingham City defender Paul Robinson played alongside the 24-year-old right-back at Bolton in 2011-12.

Riley made nine appearances for the Trotters, including three in the Premier League before injuries and the form of more experienced players barred his way.

But Robinson, who has made more than 650 league appearances for West Brom, Bolton, Blues and Watford, reckons Riley can progress with Town.

Speaking to the Shropshire Star from Blues' training base in Marbella, the 37-year-old said: "He's got lots of time on his side because at 24, he's still a baby.

"Players don't peak until they're 27, 28 and if he has a good season at Shrewsbury, Championship clubs will be looking at him.

"If he has that option, then it's not a such a massive step to the Premier League. It's realistic because he's played there in the past, but injuries held him back at the time.

"When I was with him at Bolton he was a very young, very athletic right back with a real desire to get forward.

"But when he played, he played very well – I watched him closely and he's a very good player.

"I think it was just a lack of opportunities – I don't think he was given much of a chance.

"Gretar Steinsson was ahead of him who was solid and a very good player so it was tough for Joe, at the time, because the competition was very high.

"But he himself made the decision to get out and play football, and if that meant dropping a couple of leagues, he was prepared to do it to get games which showed a great attitude.

"I watched him a few times at Bury last season. He hits a great ball, he's got great delivery, he provides assist with goals, and plays very well with his winger.

"He's able to combine and link very well down that right-hand side. Joe is also very quick across the grass and a very good defender so he gives you the best of both worlds."

Riley provided five assists from right-back last season and Robinson reckons he can improve that side of his game.

The left-sided defender said: "His delivery is very good, but he's still young and he can work on that.

"With the assists he got last season, he's doing something right and he has to work on that so he can ask questions of the attackers."
