Oxford vs Shrewsbury - Match preview

Carl Winchester is hoping Shrewsbury can build on one of their best performances of the season when they take on Oxford United tonight.

Town played out a goalless draw with Charlton at the weekend in a match they should have won, given the chances they created.

But for the second week running they were left ruing missed opportunities as they failed to score the sixth consecutive match.

That said, it has been much more like it from Shrews of late, and if they can find their shooting boots they will start picking up points.

As ever in League One, they do not have time to dwell on the weekend’s result as the next game comes around soon after, with them taking on second-placed Oxford United tonight.

Winchester says it is all about improving week on week for Town, which is something he feels they have done of late.

He said: “There was a lot of change in the summer – from managers to loads of players coming in and the staff too.

“It is going to probably take a bit more time than other teams have to see performances like the one we produced on Saturday.

“You are building relationships with people and League One is a tough league.

“There are no easy games and it is just about improving each week and I feel like we are doing that.

“We were unlucky on Saturday not to win the game but the performance was right up our among the best this season.”

Calling Winchester a utility man is a disservice to him. He is Town’s best option at right wing-back and in central midfield.

And the Northern Irishman revealed that Matt Taylor has given him a lot of freedom when he plays at wing-back – encouraging him to come into midfield and create overloads.

He said: “I am naturally a midfielder. For the whole of last season I played in midfield. Sometimes I forget that I am right wing-back as I have that midfield head on and I remember I am out of position and make an effort to get back in.

“As you get older, you just know how to move from position to position and what the gaffer wants from me.

“The gaffer said to me ahead of the weekend that when we are attacking down the left he wanted me to come inside and create an overload in the middle which I am happy to do out there.

“I was drifting inside hoping I could get a shot away or create a chance.”

On paper, this game will be the toughest test this Shrewsbury side have faced so far in the league.

Oxford United have been free-scoring under Liam Manning so far this season, but Salop will take heart from the fact they have already beaten them once this year at the Kazam Stadium. Ryan Bowman was the man with the goal on that occasion.

Salop have no fresh injury concerns.
