Opportunity knocks! - Gavin Cowan insists there will be no let-up from Shrewsbury Town

Cowan says the remaining three games provide a “great opportunity” for others to stake their claim for a place in the side.

Gavin Cowan says there will be no let-up from his Shrewsbury Town side, insisting his players are still “playing for something”.

Salop head into their final three games of the season stress-free after securing League Two safety last weekend.

They travel to strugglers Crawley Town tomorrow, with the hosts among those still battling to avoid the drop. Despite his side’s safety, Cowan insists there is still plenty at stake.

He said: “We're all playing for something. Some of them are playing for contracts, some of them have got contracts but are still playing for favour, some of them will go elsewhere and they'll be playing for form.

“Don't get it twisted, people are watching all the time, if you decide that you're going to have a chill out between now and the end of the season, it'll probably bite you on the backside. I certainly won't be letting up.”

Salop ended a long wait for an away league win with three consecutive victories following Cowan’s arrival. However, they have since gone winless on the road after their dramatic late victory at Chesterfield in early March.

Cowan has consistently stressed that securing safety was the priority. With that now achieved, attention can begin to turn towards next season and what a summer rebuild may look like.

January signing Isaac Lee is yet to make his debut for Town, and Cowan suggested the remaining fixtures could provide opportunities for others to stake their claim.

He added: “We are now, of course, going to have an eye on (next season). It's a great opportunity isn't it, to look at some of these guys.

“That was a little bit with Will Gray (last weekend), it's just a great opportunity to have a little look at them.

“I imagine that'll be the case. Obviously I've got a debrief with the staff we'll have a really intense meeting, but it's important that we're looking at some of those lads who need a good shot for us to have them in the reckoning for next year.”
