New striker next target for Shrewsbury boss

Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner is switching his focus on bringing in a new striker after sealing the signing of midfielder David McAllister.

The Irishman's capture for an undisclosed fee from Sheffield United intensifies competition at Shrewsbury for places in the middle of the park.

Watford loanee Stephen McGinn made his debut during the second half of Saturday's draw at Scunthorpe.

Captain Matt Richards, Aaron Wildig and Asa Hall have all performed there recently, while Luke Summerfield is close to fitness after hernia surgery.

Turner said: "It's a nice position to be in as I've got options right across midfield and I will need them over the weeks provided none of them go out.

"I have got a lot of midfielders but I hope to get competition in other places too. We are short up front and that will be my next target.

"I would like to bring one more in on a permanent basis if possible before the window closes. I would prefer to do that sooner rather than later, but there's still a lot of provisional work involved."

McAllister, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Town, was starting for Danny Wilson's front-runners as recently as December 4.

But the 24-year-old former Shrews loanee admits he isn't surprised how swiftly his career has moved on.

He said: "It's so cut throat in this business. I was out of the side, struggled to get back in, then was told an offer had been made and I was out of the door.

"There was no hesitation once I knew it was Shrewsbury. There were a couple of other clubs interested but this was the club for me having been here last season."

McAllister played 15 games last season but missed on Town's promotion after the club failed to get a red card rescinded so he could have his loan renewed.

He said: "I would have loved to have stayed and I'm still chasing my medal. It was a surprise to see Shrewsbury down in the relegation zone before Christmas.

"I had been telling people they would hold their own, but I think we can push on."
