“Never happy” - Determined Gavin Cowan wants more from Shrewsbury Town

Salop could secure their safety this weekend and Cowan has demanded more from his side

Boss Gavin Cowan admits he is “never happy” - despite steering Shrewsbury Town clear of trouble.

Salop welcome Oldham Athletic tomorrow, knowing their Football League status could be secured even in defeat.

Having taken the reins with Town just two points above the League Two relegation zone, they now sit 11 clear heading into the final four matches. But Cowan is determined to build on that progress.

“My wife's probably going to be fuming with me, because I'm never happy,” he said after Town’s midweek defeat to league leaders Bromley.

“I want to keep striving. It was there for us. They’re under a bit of pressure trying to get it over the line. I feel like we were in a really good place from the weekend.

“We had a great week's worth of training and I felt as though when it was there for the taking, we just took a foot off the gas and that's hard to take because that's uncontrollable.”

Cowan has overseen an impressive revival since arriving in late January.

Town missed the chance to mathematically secure safety at Bromley, but depending on other results, a gap of at least 10 points to the bottom two would confirm their status.

However, Cowan believes that opportunity was there to be taken in south London.

He added: “I felt like the opportunity was there. I've laid the gauntlet down to the players - if you want to be here next season…part of this regime, you have to come and show more and invest more into what it is that we're trying to do.

“Show a little bit more quality than we did.

“I'd say for the first half an hour, I thought the lads were excellent. The lads coming on, I thought Sam Clucas was excellent when he came on. Taylor Perry, Isaac England, I thought they did really well.

“We need to make sure that from the off that we start like we did, but then continue it through the game.

“That just comes down to a bit of game management. It comes down to my leaders making sure that we're the best version of ourselves.”
