Micky Mellon stunned by Town fightback

Manager Micky Mellon admitted he was left stunned after watching Shrewsbury score two stoppage time goals to win at Carlisle.

A second-half Charlie Wyke goal for United meant Salop headed into four minutes of added time trailing 1-0 at Brunton Park.

But Mickey Demetriou hammered home a header from a corner in the 93rd minute.

And 60 seconds later things got even better when James Collins brilliantly fired home from a Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro cross to take Town top of League Two.

"I'll be honest, I was stunned," Mellon said. "With a couple of minutes to go you're thinking about what you are going to say to the players after the game.

"But to say that was dramatic would be an under-statement. And what a finish from James Collins at the end.

"When it's coming across to you like that and you slot it away the way he did, that was pure class. Under all that pressure it really was top-drawer."

Mellon was unhappy with his team's performance in the first half, especially in front of Salop fans who had made a long journey on a cold Tuesday night.

"We were poor in the first half," he said. "We never competed and they battled us all over the pitch and Jayson Leutwiler has pulled off some Spiderman-like saves.

"At half-time I thought they wanted it more which is really disappointing because I've never had to say that. But we changed the shape a little bit, the subs improved us and it became a more even game.

"I'm just so pleased we have sent the fans away with a win because we didn't represent them well enough in the first half."

Town have won 18 points with goals inside the last 10 minutes. "That can't be a coincidence," Mellon said.
