Luke Summerfield hoping streak continues as Shrewsbury Town face Crewe

Shrewsbury Town midfielder Luke Summerfield will be hoping his hot streak against Crewe Alexandra continues when he goes for goal at Gresty Road tomorrow.

He netted in each League One fixture against the Alex last season and both gleaned points for the club, a home win and away draw deemed a respectable haul.

The only goal of the game at the Greenhous Meadow last November, a 43rd minute header, was Summerfield's first for the club since arriving the previous summer.

He repeated the feat to earn Town a share of the spoils away from home in March's reverse fixture, again nodding home to make sure the match proved productive.

It all formed part of a revenge motive for the 26-year-old, who was part of the Cheltenham Town team that Crewe beat in the 2012 play-off final to gain promotion.

He said: "I have had some ups and downs against Crewe. I lost with Cheltenham to them at Wembley, which was one of the biggest disappointments of my career so far.

"But, last season, to score a couple of goals against them was a nice positive.

"Hopefully, I might notch against them again tomorrow to get us some more points.

"It was a nice little bit of payback and I haven't got off the mark yet for this season.

"Even though I feel I influence play in other areas, I need to start scoring more."

Shrews experienced away-day joy at Stevenage the last time they hit the road, a pleasing 3-1 victory where Summerfield played the full 90 minutes.

That was dampened somewhat by last weekend's 1-0 defeat at home to Walsall and he feels some erratic form illustrates that Town are too up and down.

He said: "Winning at Stevenage was much-needed for us and, hopefully, that away form will carry on this weekend.

"It will be tough, Crewe are a good team who like to play football.

"But we will be going there in a positive frame of mind, we are staying positive as a group because we know we have got a lot more to give. We have got enough ability.

"We need to get the most out of the players we have here and the league table doesn't lie, we have been up and down in a few performances and we need that little bit more consistency.

"If we can do that, I am sure we will soon be climbing the league and causing a few teams problems."

A pivotal festive period looms on the horizon for the club with Crewe first, followed back-to-back home games against Tranmere Rovers and Preston North End.

Rovers arrive first on Boxing Day before Preston are the visitors on Sunday December 29, before a New Year's Day trip to take on fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic.

The two fixtures at the Greenhous Meadow, in particular, are where Summerfield believes Town can build for a prosperous 2014 and set down a marker.

He said: "It's a massive period for any team, there's so many games and a few wins can rocket you right up the table.

"Every game is vital and I imagine the whole squad will be used.

"There's Crewe and then the two home games so if we can go on a bit of a run and make our ground into a fortress, that will stand us in good stead going into next year.

"That would be a positive thing, you can always build on home form."
